How Women Voters Will Shape the 2024 Election

As the 2024 election approaches, the role of women voters is more critical than ever. Women have consistently turned out to vote at higher rates than men, and their influence is expected to be a decisive factor in the upcoming election. Here’s a closer look at how women voters will shape the 2024 election and insights from experts on the gender gap in politics.

Women Voters: A Powerful Bloc

With nearly 89 million women registered to vote, they represent the largest and most influential voting bloc in the U.S. In the 2020 presidential election, over 82 million women cast their ballots, significantly contributing to Joe Biden’s victory. This trend is expected to continue, making women voters a key demographic for political campaigns.

 Higher Voter Turnout

Since 1980, women have registered and voted at higher rates than men in every presidential election. This consistent turnout underscores the importance of addressing issues that resonate with women voters. As Ruth Bader Ginsburg famously said, “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. It shouldn’t be that women are the exception”.

Higher Civic Engagement

Women often exhibit a stronger sense of civic duty and responsibility towards voting. This sense of duty is partly due to historical socialization and the feminist movements that emphasized the importance of political participation for women. As Susan Carroll, a senior scholar at the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, notes, “Older generations of women had been socialized pre-suffrage. Maybe it wasn’t proper for women to be involved in politics then, before the personal had officially become political”.

Greater Interaction with Government Services

Women are more likely to interact with government services due to their roles as primary caregivers and their higher dependency on social safety nets. This increased interaction makes the outcomes of elections more salient to them. According to Catherine Rampell of the Washington Post, “Women are more dependent on safety-net services such as food stamps and child-care subsidies than men are. Even among Americans who aren’t poor, women are more likely than men to be primary caregivers”.

Life Expectancy and Demographics

Women generally have a longer life expectancy than men, which means they make up a larger percentage of the voting-age population. This demographic factor contributes to higher voter turnout among women. Additionally, women outlive men in every subsection of the population, further increasing their presence among eligible voters.

Educational Attainment

Women have increasingly attained higher levels of education, which is a strong predictor of voter turnout. Higher educational attainment is associated with greater political awareness and participation. Recent studies have shown that among those with some college education or higher, women tend to vote at higher rates than men.

Social and Political Mobilization

Efforts to mobilize women voters, particularly around issues that directly affect them, have been effective. Political campaigns and organizations often target women voters with messages about reproductive rights, healthcare, and family policies. The shift in party platforms, especially since the Reagan era, has also made women’s issues more prominent in political discourse, encouraging higher turnout among women.

Generational Shifts

Younger generations of women have been socialized in a post-feminist movement era, where political involvement is seen as a means to improve their status in society. This generational shift has led to higher political engagement among younger women compared to their male counterparts. The gender gap in voter turnout is particularly large among voters aged 18-44.

Key Issues for Women Voters

Gender, family, and reproductive issues are pivotal in shaping the political landscape. The overturning of Roe v. Wade has intensified the focus on reproductive rights, with Biden supporters overwhelmingly favoring legal access to abortion, while Trump supporters are more divided on the issue. Melinda Gates highlights the broader impact of gender equality: “When women and girls are equal, everyone is greater”.

The Gender Gap in Voting Preferences

The gender gap in voting preferences has been evident in every presidential election since 1980. Women tend to lean more towards Democratic candidates, while men are more likely to support Republican candidates. This gap is influenced by differing views on social and economic policies. As Eleanor Roosevelt once noted, “Women must learn to play the game as men do”.

Reaching Women Voters

Political campaigns must prioritize reaching women voters with tailored messaging. Effective strategies include multiscreen campaigns across live TV and streaming platforms, as well as audience-targeted campaigns that address issues important to women. Angela Merkel’s words resonate here: “You could certainly say that I’ve never underestimated myself, there’s nothing wrong with being ambitious”.

Women’s participation in politics not only as voters but also as candidates is crucial for a balanced representation. Michele Bachelet, former President of Chile, emphasized, “For me, a better democracy is a democracy where women do not only have the right to vote and to elect but to be elected”.

Looking Back to Move Forward

Women have been fighting for the right to vote and for women’s rights for decades. Regardless of your political affiliation, please vote. Your voice matters. Your vote matters. Every single one.

The progress towards gender equality in politics is ongoing. As Barack Obama stated, “That’s what twenty-first century feminism is about: the idea that when everybody is equal, we are all more free”. The 2024 election will undoubtedly reflect the evolving role of women in shaping the political future of the nation.

The Takeaway

Women voters are poised to play a transformative role in the 2024 election. Their higher voter turnout, focus on key issues, and growing influence in political campaigns underscore the importance of addressing their concerns and priorities. As we look ahead, the voices and votes of women will be pivotal in determining the direction of the country.
